What is a Mold and is it Dangerous?
Mold is a soft green or gray growth on furniture that is caused by extreme humidity. This can be caused by different weather that can cause excessive humidity. Mold can also be caused by water intrusion on your furniture, this means that your furniture absorbs water or moisture that can spread the growth as time goes by.
Mold is dangerous for your Health. Aside from affecting the appearance of your beautiful piece, mold on wood furniture is dangerous for you and your family. Mold can give off a musty smell and this is the allergenic type that can cause coughing and can aggravate asthmatic conditions. Blocks Tannin Stains
Cedar and knotty pine wood sometimes bleed tannins (a naturally occurring acid typically found in wood knots) through paint, staining surfaces in the process and potentially ruining your custom design. Fortunately, Outdoor Additive for paint and wood blocks those tannins to keep your Real Milk Paint projects looking smooth and evenly hued for a beautifully polished appearance. This tannin-blocking ability also lets you get more creative with more rustic wood cuts, adding to the eco-friendliness of your personal and professional arts and crafts projects.

How to Use Outdoor Additive for Paint and Wood
When you’re ready to start projects destined for use on your deck, porch, patio or lawn, first mix up the Real Milk Paint shade you require to the desired consistency. Our powdered milk paint typically mixes at a 1:1 ratio with water, but you may want to add more or less water to your mix, depending on how thick or thin you need the paint. Additionally, if you want to add Anti-Foaming Agent to minimize foaming after mixing do so now.
Outdoor Additive in Real Milk Paint works best on raw wood and bare surfaces, so you need to strip away paint and finish before you begin. For best results, use our Soy-Gel Professional Paint Remover to strip away shellac, enamel and latex paint, and rely on this product to safely remove and encapsulate lead-based paints. Surfaces already coated with Real Milk Paint or other protein-based paints typically benefit from our Milk Paint Remover, which strips away up to eight coats, but you may need a solvent to help out if you’ve sealed those surfaces with shellac or lacquer.
Though Real Milk Paint application doesn’t require sanding surfaces beforehand, you may want to lightly sand the surface to improve the tooth, especially if you’re painting raw wood. Clean up the dust and debris using our Tri-Sodium Phosphate cleaner, and remove any iron stains from the surface with our Oxalic Wood Bleach. If there are any divots or dents you wish to smooth out before painting, put our Wood Filler to work before you begin adding color to your DIY project.
After mixing your Real Milk Paint shade and any other additives you require, add 1 cup of Outdoor Additive for paint and wood per gallon and mix the formulation again. For smaller amounts, use 1/8 and 1/4 cup of Outdoor Additive respectively to make a pint or quart of Real Milk Paint for outdoor use.
Now that you’ve mixed your Real Milk Paint, coat your project piece with the mixture and add additional coats as necessary to get the look you want. Once dry, you need to finish the painted surface with a reliable sealer to help it easily withstand the rigors of inclement weather.
Finishing Paint Mixed with Outdoor Additive
While Outdoor Additive confers numerous benefits to exterior projects, it doesn’t add water-resistant properties to Real Milk Paint. This lack of resistance means you need a sealer like our Outdoor Defense Oil to finish your DIY project when you want your Real Milk Paint hues to completely resist the elements.
Made with 100% Pure Tung Oil, pine oil and zinc, Outdoor Defense Oil offers a nontoxic formulation that provides additional resistance to UV rays and mold and mildew. This finishing oil is safe for food contact, making it a great choice for outdoor tables and butcher blocks, and it features a matte finish, so it doesn’t add sheen to Real Milk Paint covered surfaces.
Just like Outdoor Additive, Outdoor Defense Oil works not only on wood but also on porous surfaces such as concrete, stucco and brick for added exterior versatility.
How to Use Outdoor Defense Oil
Once the Real Milk Paint you applied dries, it’s time to seal the surface with Outdoor Defense Oil to ensure the piece resists water and holds up well to other environmental hazards. Begin by shaking the container well and pouring out what you need into a rolling pan or smaller container.
Outdoor Defense Oil flows best in temperatures above 60 degrees F, but it sometimes takes on a cloudy haze when it dries on the surface too fast under direct sunlight, so it’s best applied in early morning/evening, shady areas, or covered spaces. Designed to absorb deeply into wood pores without pooling on the surface, this sealer offers excellent protection with just 3 to 5 coats.
To apply Outdoor Defense Oil, brush, roll, or spray it on the Real Milk Paint-covered surface with a clean, lint-free rag, then let it absorb into the pores. Once it all goes into the wood or porous surface you’re sealing, repeat the process again and again until the surface simply doesn’t hold any more Outdoor Defense Oil. Remove any leftover sealer with a clean, lint-free rag and allow the surface to undergo the natural curing process.
Though Outdoor Defense Oil dries quickly, it typically takes around 30 days to fully cure. This sealer dries by polymerization, not evaporation, so oil trapped in the pores may sometimes rise to the surface during curing. If this happens, simply wipe it away. Be sure to keep surfaces clear of items while curing to prevent suffocation and ensure even coloration, and keep in mind that the curing process works best in a warmer area, so plan project placement accordingly.
Using Real Milk Paint for exterior projects helps you maintain your country, farmhouse or rustic aesthetic throughout your indoor and outdoor furnishings and decor. Using Outdoor Additives in milk paint helps you place outside better weather, seasonal conditions and inclement weather and keeps your DIY designs looking great without harsh chemicals, helping you feel good about the eco-friendliness of your projects.
